John Wilkinson first began making kinetic sculptures as a hobby in 1998, shortly after seeing the Alexander Calder exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. A mechanical engineer by training, John was immediately drawn to the proportion, balance and graceful movement of the fine arts ‘mobile.’ John’s early mobiles were created as anniversary and housewarming presents for family and friends, and later led to commissioned works for homes and offices. He currently both small table top sculptures and kinetic sculptures ranging from ethereal aluminum mobiles that move freely with the most minimal air movement to more rugged outdoor models that can withstand the wind and weather. He has a particular interest in creating custom pieces for client homes and workplaces. A lifelong enthusiast of woodworking and carpentry, John continues to work on an extensive remodeling of his Saugus home, where he designs and constructs new pieces in a basement metalworking shop.
